Cernobbio

Cernobbio stands near the stream Breggia, on the lake, at the foot of Monte Bisbino, with its different hamlets that form one of the biggest towns of the Lario.

Cernobbio, of ancient origins, succeeded to obtain in XIII century privileges and own statutes, but this flourishing period was soon followed, in XVI century, by the invasion of the Spanish and repeated sacks. Its name derives from an ancient Cluniac monastery, - Coenobium-, property of the Bishops of Pavia confirmed by Lotario in X century, standing in the nowadays area of Villa D' Este.
The economy of the town is focused above all on the spinning of the wool and the silk, on the production of paper and, thanks to the presence of many noble and rich nineteenth-century villas, on the tourism too. Here born one of the first industrial silk factory.

In the older part of the town, still exist some characteristic constructions that go back to XVI century. From here starts the path known here like - Via dei Monti Lariani-,a long and fascinating walk; following it it is possible to reach Monte Bisbino (1325 mt), on the top of it there is a sixteenth-century sanctuary dedicated to Virgin Mary, from whose parvis it is possible to appreciate the panoramic sight on the lake, the Alps and the plain.
