Domaso, Vercana
The climate in Domaso is particularly mild and favourable.A constant breeze called Breva caresses its shores and for this reason many equipped sailing and windsufing centres have opened. However many other sports can be practised such as water-skiing, canoeing, trekking, mountain biking, mountain climbing and trout fishing, ecc..
Domaso is an old fishing village which has conserved in time the characteristics of its past uniting this aspect with a dynamic capacity to welcome tourism. For this reason it has become the most hospitable centre of the Alto Lario, equipped with modern facilities which have made it renowned not only in Italy but also abroad.
Many camp-sites lie on the plain formed by the river Livo.
Vercana stands in a dominating position on a knoll which overlooks the lake and the Pian di Spagna.
The great charm of this village is due to its salubrious, tranquil and restful environment.
Excursionists and lovers of nature will find numerous nature trails and panoramic itineraries. The most worthy is the one which sets off from the Monti of Vercana (922 mt) and takes you to Alpe di Graglio (1420 mt) passing through beech-woods, across flat pastures and fields.
Church of San Bartolomeo - Domaso
It was built in the 16th century over a medieval building and later restructured. In the external lunette above the right hand side portal is a beautiful marble sculpture of the -Pietà- ascribed to Rodari (XVI century). Among the many frescoes and numerous paintings stands out an altarpiece in the third chapel on the left ascribed to Procaccini dated around 1600 portraying a "Madonna with Child". In his right hand the plump child almost flaunts a key in front of Saint Peter while the Madonna who is handsomely dressed has features which seem typical of Michaelangelo's works.
In 1992 a fresco dated 1325 was discovered in the opposite chapel. The theme is similar to the former one, but here the Madonna has an expressionless face. In fact at the time it was painted, Domaso was just beginning to recover after having been repeatedly plundered and completely destroyed by a fire. The child is holding a little bird tightly in his hands and is putting his foot forward as if wanting to rise from his mother's lap. Other 18th century frescoes by P. Ligari, a gilded astylar cross by G.P. Lierni (1533) chief goldsmith of Como and a venerated medieval wooden crucifix give importance and prestige to this parish church.
Villa Camilla
This 18th century villa was originally home to the Serbregondi or rather "Ser Bregondi" a noble family which dates back to XIII century. Today it is the sede of the Town Hall. It is embellished by a garden of camellias, baroque-style balconies and blazons on the outside and frescoed rooms inside.
Church of San Salvatore -Vercana
It stands majestically in the square and it is one of the most expressive examples of baroque architecture on the Lake of Como. From here one has a wide view of the lake with the mouth of the Adda river and the lakelet of Pione and its monastery on the facing side. Inside the church are kept frescoes ascribed to Domenico Caresana and son of Lugano. The father engaged in the work of the second chapel on the left where we find the high-altar dedicated to Saint Rosalia. His frescoes portray "Stories of the Virgin Mary". The son whereas worked on the small chapel opposite dedicated to Saint Andrew. Even the painter Antonio Maria Caraccioli, known as "Caracciolo of Vercana" a native villager who emigrated to Palermo in 1770 left many frescoes even in his parish.
Of equal value and workmanship are the great statues of the Angels, Prophets and Evangelists by Silva, and the "Stories of the Passion with the Sybils and the Prophets" by Giovan Battista Pozzo; these are all works located in the abse of the church of Vercana.
