Schloss von Vezio - Perledo
The walls of this fortress extended from the Foppa to the spur on which the castle lies, in its perimeter the rooms and the warehouses were enclosed, whose foundations are still visible nowadays.
Some recoveries of weapons and human rests of several ages and origins, that now are in the museums of Como, Sondrio, Lecco and Esino, testify that in the outskirtses of the tower many battles were fought.
Between the most important finding, we remember the grave of the age of the iron, discovered in 1891 and, in 1955-56, stung of iron arrows with triangular cuspid, swords and helmets.
The central tower is twenty meters high, had signalling and lookout-post functions. It was built up on the remainders of a roman fortification of Queen Teodolinda and has a square crenellation, similar to the one of the castle of Cly in Val d'Aosta.
The rock followed the fate of Varenna, to which it had been joined from walls that, like two long arms, went down until the lake to defense the village.
Currently the building is encircled by thick walls, and the castles and the towers, scattered on the heights, had function of points for the collection of the tolls.
The castle was not involved, in 1244, when Varenna was destroyed from the comaschi, against who it had been rebelled; The population found shelter in the castle that, for its position, was impregnable and in it the varennesi decided to rebel again, four years later.
In this occasion Varenna was liad waste, but the castle resisted.
Vezio saw the Lordships of the Visconti and the Torriani, the dominations of the French and the Spanish, therefore as the Venetians and of the lords of Bergamo.
It became, with Varenna, an episcopal feud, therefore passed to Dal Verme family and to other, until the count Francesco Sfondrati and its heirs. In this period the castle wasquite rebuilt more than repaired.
In 1647 the lands of Perledo and Varenna were invested in feud of the count Giulio Monti.
